Over the past few months, one thing that I have found helpful for my own mental and emotional well-being has been to identify the lies I have believed about myself and confront them with the truth. Most recently, I have uncovered this lie about “fitting in” being synonymous with belonging. I would often tell myself that because I did not “fit in”, I also did not belong (specifically in the context of my work). Well, I had to confront the lie with a greater truth and I would love to share that with you today.
Belonging is a fundamental human need that plays a crucial role in our mental and emotional wellness. Research has found that individuals who feel a strong sense of belonging tend to have lower rates of anxiety and depression, as well as higher resilience in the face of challenges. When we find ourselves in spaces where we strongly feel social connection and this sense of “belonging” our bodies release oxytocin, often referred to as the “bonding hormone”, which promotes feelings of trust, security, and emotional well-being. I mention these facts because it is important to understand that our desire (read “craving”) for belonging is not optional, it can often be core to us. It is a right desire to seek “belonging” in some way, and I am offering forth that you do, in fact, belong.
In a world that often values conformity and fitting in, it's easy to feel like an outsider. We may find ourselves in situations where we don't quite fit in or where our perspectives and ideas differ from the majority. But the truth is, belonging is not solely dependent on conforming or fitting in. It goes far deeper than that. Belonging is about recognizing and embracing our inherent worth and value, regardless of whether we conform to societal norms or not.
Imagine an ear. Its purpose is to hear, to listen, and to provide balance. Now, picture that same ear transplanted to an unconventional location, like the kneecap. It might seem out of place, odd, or even unwelcome in that context. However, that doesn't mean the ear loses its essential function or its belonging. In its rightful place on the side of the head, it brings tremendous value and contributes to the overall well-being of the body. Similarly, our uniqueness and differences, even if they make us feel like misfits in certain environments, can bring immense value when we find our rightful place.
Belonging is not about conforming to a mold; it's about embracing our individuality and finding spaces where our unique contributions can thrive. Just as God purposefully designed each part of the human body to fulfill specific functions, so too has God placed us in diverse environments where our differences are not only welcomed but necessary. Our different perspectives, experiences, and talents have the power to challenge the status quo, inspire innovation, and create positive change.
It's essential to recognize that not fitting in does not equate to not belonging. When we hold onto our authenticity and refuse to compromise our values and beliefs, we create space for others to do the same. We become beacons of hope and permission for those who have felt pressured to conform. By embracing our true selves, we give others the courage to do the same, fostering an environment of acceptance and belonging.
Consider work environments, for instance. It's common to feel like an outsider when our ideas challenge the established norms or when our unique strengths and skills diverge from conventional expectations. However, it is precisely these differences that can bring fresh perspectives, foster creativity, and lead to breakthroughs. Instead of trying to fit in, we should focus on contributing our unique talents and ideas to the collective effort. When we bring our whole selves to the table, we not only enhance our sense of belonging but also enrich the experiences and outcomes for everyone involved.
In social settings, too, our differences can be a catalyst for positive change. Our diverse backgrounds, beliefs, and perspectives add richness to the fabric of society. When we embrace our individuality and show up authentically, we create an environment that values and celebrates diversity. We become a testament to the beauty of human variation and permit others to embrace their uniqueness. In this way, we inspire others to find safety in being themselves and foster a culture of inclusivity where everyone feels seen, heard, and valued.
Let us remember that our journey toward belonging is not about seeking validation from others or conforming to their expectations. It's about recognizing and celebrating our worth as individuals, and understanding that we are uniquely created with purpose and intention. Belonging starts within ourselves, with self-acceptance and self-love. When we truly embrace our value and identity, we can extend that acceptance to others, creating a ripple effect of belonging and fostering genuine connections.
Bloom where you are planted, for you have been intentionally placed in this world with your unique gifts and qualities. Embrace the beauty of your differences, knowing that you belong, even if you don't always fit in. Your authenticity and unapologetic individuality will inspire others to do the same. As we learn to celebrate and honor our diversity, we create a world where everyone can belong, and together, we can make a positive impact that transcends conformity and embraces the fullness of human potential.
In conclusion, let us accept that belonging goes beyond conforming or fitting in. We belong because we exist, and our differences are not limitations but assets waiting to be unleashed. Embrace your uniqueness, find your rightful place, and let your light shine. The world needs your authentic self; through your example, others will find the courage to embrace their individuality. Please consider that you belong precisely because you don’t fit in. May we all journey towards a deeper sense of belonging, celebrating our differences and fostering a world where everyone can thrive.
